  • Bobbio and the Impossible Third Way The article focuses on Norberto Bobbio's contribution to the ideological debate on the "third way" that developed in 1978 within the Italian Left. Discussing opinions of Enrico Berlinguer and Bettino Craxi, Bobbio argued that there was no third option beyond "real socialism" and social-democracy. He believed that neither Eurocommunism, defended by the leader of the PCI, nor the rehabilitation of Proudhon�s ideas were politically viable. According to Bobbio, there were only two methods or "roads" to political power: The despotic and the democratic ways. The democratic way has been chosen by the European social-democracies and that should be the reference for the Italian Left.
