Using the division of family groups proposed by Laslett to describe the preindustrial English society, well carry out the first grouping of the diverse domestic structures which made up Villaviciosa in the 18th century. Villaviciosa is situated on the shore of the Cantabrian Sea in central-east Asturias. However we wont solely look at homes, rather we will trace a basic picture, based mainly on the individual answers from the Ensenada cadastre, in which the different family models will be linked with the economic means which existed in the coastal county in the mid-18th century and thereby looking at how the connection between both factors would place Villaviciosa in the wide framework of small urban centres which are characteristic of the Northeast of the Peninsula
