La protección del patrimonio paleontológico en la Región de Murcia: Experiencias e iniciativas

    El Servicio de Patrimonio Histórico de Murcia puso en marcha hace unos años el Plan de Estructuración del Patrimonio Paleontológico con el fin de gestionar, proteger y conservar los bienes muebles e inmuebles paleontológicos de la región. Este Plan se orientó inicialmente a la consecución de los siguientes objetivos: definir las necesidades de regulación normativa para la protección y estudio del patrimonio paleontológico regional; catalogar los yacimientos y colecciones paleontológicas abordando al mismo tiempo una evaluación de riesgos y prioridades con el fin de definir unas estrategias realistas de protección e investigación; conocer y reorientar, en su caso, la actividad de aficionados y profesionales en la región insertando su actividad dentro del marco legal y, por último, evaluar los medios disponibles para el depósito y exposición de las colecciones de fósiles. En este trabajo se presenta una primera aproximación al inventario de yacimientos que está siendo actualmente elaborado en Murcia. A partir de la aplicación de una serie de criterios científicos, socioculturales y económicos, así como el importante factor que supone el riesgo de deterioro, se pretende obtener una valoración fiable que permitirá disponer de una información útil a la hora de elaborar planes de gestión y protección específicos para cada uno de los bienes patrimoniales.

Primary aims of this plan were (1) Defining the legal regulations needed for a proper study and protection of the paleontological heritage of the region. (2) Producing a detailed inventory of fossil sites and paleontological collections. (3) Such inventory should allow establishing a set of main priorities of action, and a list of major risks affecting the fossil sites. This would help defining realistic strategies for protection and research, in order to re-orient the activities of uncontrolled amateur collectors in a correct direction, and to support the professional work of palaeontologists.
