  Este artículo pretende analizar con brevedad, pero con rigor científico, los acontecimientos bélicos que se produjeron en el tormentoso verano de 1813 en el sitio, asedio, saqueo e incendio de Donostia, durante los últimos estertores de la conocida como Guerra de la Independencia (1808-1814). Tras un sucinto estudio de la situación de la ciudad y una parca narración de las fases del asedio y asalto, el núcleo del trabajo se centra en el análisis de los argumentos en pro y en contra de las tres teorías más importantes sobre las causas y responsabilidades de la trágica masacre perpetrada. Advierte el autor que todavía restan aspectos sin investigar adecuadamente y otros que necesitan una mayor profundización. Del estudio se deduce una conclusión clara: los autores directos de la mortandad fueron las tropas angloportuguesas y las guerras sólo producen dolor, angustia y muerte.

  Artikulu honetan, labur baina zehaztasun zientifikoz aztertu nahi dira 1813ko uda gogorrean, Independentzia Gerra izenekoa (1808-1814) bukatzear zegoela, Donostia setiatu, inguratu, arpilatu eta sutu zutenean gertatu ziren gerra-gertaerak. Hiriaren egoera labur aztertu eta setioaren eta inguraketaren faseen kontaketa urria egin eta gero, lanaren erdigunea egindako triskantza tragikoaren zergaitei eta erantzukizunei buruzko hiru teoria garrantzitsuenen aldeko eta kontrako argudioen azterketa da. Egileak ohartarazten du alderdi batzuk geratu direla behar bezala ikertu gabe, eta beste alderdi batzuk, aldiz, sakonago ikertu behar direla. Azterlanetik ondorio argi bat atera daiteke: hildako ugarien eragile zuzenak armada ingeles eta portugaldarrak izan ziren, eta gerrek oinazea, larritasuna eta heriotza besterik ez dute sortzen.

  This article seeks to provide a brief analysis, but with scientific rigour, of the military events that occurred in the tempestuous summer of 1813 during the besieging, siege, plundering and fire of Donostia/San Sebastián, during the last throes of the Peninsular War (1808-1814).

  After a succint study of the situation of the city and a sparse account of the siege and attack, the core of the work is focused on analysing the arguments for and against the three most important theories on the causes and responsibilities of the tragic massacre. The author points out that there are still aspects not fully researched and others that need further elaborations. A clear conclusion can be deduced from the paper: the direct perpetrators of the deaths were the Anglo-Portuguese troops and that was only cause pain, sorrow and death.
