  • Resumen
    • The paper deals with the particular iconography of the Temperance, as it appears in the Salone of a medieval house in Ferrara, Palazzo Minerbi-Dal Sale. The fresco represents the cardinal Virtue turning a key so to close the gate of the city model held in her hand. First, the iconographic sources are presented: a series of Italian manuscripts produced in the Po area in the second half of the 14th century, Giusto de' Menabuoi's frescoes in Padova (Church of the Eremitani, Cortellieri Chapel), and Serafino de' Serafini's in Ferrara (Church of S. Agostino, Marinetti Chapel). Then, we present some cases of iconographic contamination showing the diffusion and the reworked version of the same iconography. Finally, the Temperance of Palazzo Minerbi-Dal Sale is compared with the image of S. Caterina painted in the homonymous church in Treviso: the city model attributed to the female figure is, in both frescoes, an inhabited city. This iconographic parallel suggests some observations about the artist's identity and the dating of Casa Minerbi-Dal Sale frescoes not before the last quarter of 14th century.
