Resumen de Libri di coro ad Arezzo nel secondo duecento contesti e nuove prospettive interpretative

Alessandro Varavallo

  • The first part of this paper considers the historical background, which, in the 13th century, saw the flourishing of illumination in Arezzo. This phenomenon can be probably read as a direct consequence of the rivalry between the cathedral of San Donato and the "pieve" of Santa Maria, the most important city church, after the cathedral's seat had been moved, in 1203, from the Pionta hill inside the town walls. The second part focuses on two Cathedral manuscripts, F and G, underlininig how their gothic aspect can be linked not only to the influence of the illumination school flourished in Bologna in the same years, but also to the contact with the illuminated book production developed under the reign of Frederick II and Manfredi in Southern Italy. The decoration of such books can be attributed to the so-called Primo Maestro dei Corali di Santa Maria Novella. Among the liturgical books of the "pieve", the only figurative initial in codex A reveals its proximity to the style of the Florentine painter Coppo di Marcovaldo.
