  • Resumen
    • Some "Corpora canonum" manuscripts executed in the 9th and 10th centuries are considered for their visual strategies adopted by copysts and illuminators in producing such a literary genre. The second aim of the essay lays in submitting Kurt Weitzmann's theory of an illustrated cycle of the "Collectio canonum" to an in depth analysis based upon manuscripts. It seems that function and not an aesthetic purpose directed the choices of the copysts. In the historical period commonly labeled "Macedonian Renaissance", canonical manuscripts stayed out of the renovations afecting the Byazantine society. Their being such "conservative" represents the main feature of the studied manuscripts, which were meant to be read and consulted rather than appreciated for their formal qualities.
