Clément Ader invented the plane - the avion - s the name and the machine. Indeed the life of "the father of aviation" stays imbued with a mythological dimension, which invariably aims to reveal the eternal, and in his time unrecognised, glory of the inventor of genius. In reality, Ader is far from having been a martyr, and even amassed a considerable fortune during his brilliant career as entrepreneur and inventor. Finding its sources in the Ader archive at the CNAM (Centre national des arts et métiers), this paper retraces he way the inventor's black legend gradually imposed itself over and against historical reality

Clément Ader est l'inventeur de l'avion (le véhicule et le mot). Or, la vie du « père de l'aviation » se trouve affublée d'une dimension mythologique, ayant invariablement pour but de révéler la gloire éternelle (et en son temps méconnue) du génial inventeur. En réalité, Ader est loin d'avoir été un martyr, et il a même amassé une considérable fortune au cours de sa brillante carrière d'entrepreneur d'invention. À partir de l'étude des archives du fonds Ader au CNAM, cet article retrace la façon dont la légende noire de l'inventeur s'est progressivement instaurée, au détriment de la réalité historique
