    After 1830, how did professional literary critics but also novelists cum critics take into account the social ambitions shown by the novel, in particular those of the novel of manners ? Answering the question amounts to showing how contemporary criticism addressed with lucidity the revolutions being undergone by the form, but also managed to emphasize its social ambitions. The novel is thus the object of three different sociologies : one consists in seeing it as itself a social phenomenon ; another in studying, often with some anxiety, its extraordinary influence ; and a third in considering it as an exceptional tool for the analysis of social pathologies, this genre, itself in such revolutionary flux, revealing itself as very apt at recounting the ways in which a society in crisis dysfunctions

    Comment, après 1830, les critiques de profession mais aussi les romanciers-critiques prennentils en considération les ambitions sociologiques que manifeste le roman, en particulier le roman de moeurs nouvellement promu ? Répondre à une telle question revient à montrer comment la critique contemporaine a su témoigner avec lucidité des révolutions du roman, mais aussi mettre l'accent sur sa nouvelle ambition sociale. Le roman se voit alors l'objet de trois sociologies complémentaires : la première consiste à le considérer lui-même comme un phénomène social ; une autre à étudier, non sans inquiétude souvent, son extraordinaire influence ; la dernière à considérer le roman comme un analyste privilégié des pathologies sociales, ce genre lui-même en révolution se révélant propre à dire les dysfonctionnements d'une société en crise
