The paper examines the work of architect Torello Macchia, ranging from his renovation of the Propositura of Lari (Pisa) in 1908 to his vaguely neo-Rationalist planning of the kindergarten for the Crocifissine nuns, again in Lari. The paper illustrates the wide range of religious and civil projects undertaken by the architect within this thirty-year time frame, based on the evidence from local newspapers and the Macchia Archive. The latter, while containing few original drawings, includes a photographic album with reproductions of projects by this architect and engineer, who worked not just in the Pisa area, but also in Livorno and nearby towns. The neo-medieval, vaguely historicist and eclectic language which Macchia adopted for the Propositura of Lari served as a simple paradigm for other works of his. At the same time, one must acknowledge Macchia's capacity to face the challenges posed by large-size building sites, by often coming up with the new -and typically "coastal"- attraction towards an exotic and neo-moresque style that yielded notable architectural solutions in Livorno.
