We consider the purpose of the small, early copy on copper after the "Birth of the Virgin", the large altarpiece by Lodovico Cigoli painted in 1608 for SS. Annunziata in Pistoia. The panel is part of the bequest by Alessandro Marabottini to the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia. The motivation of a copy is singular and, at times, significant.
It can be an autograph replica, a study by a disciple, an act homage or a commission by a follower, or a later copy for a commercial purpose. Observing a relation to a drawing by a disciple in the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica in Rome, we suggest possible interpretations of the copper panel as an under-painting for a replica commissioned to Cigoli, a study for learning, or a copy by a follower. Even without a definitive explanation, the copy documents the early admiration of the master's art.
