    L’objectif de cette étude est d’explorer la construction du personnage de Lawrence Donald Jonhstone dans le roman policier L’Homme à l’envers, de l’auteure française Fred Vargas. Nous analyserons, d’abord, comment ce Canadien –dont la description souligne explicitement des caractéristiques opposées à celles des habitants de la communauté qui l’accueille– est présenté comme un être déchiré, héritier de deux cultures différentes. Ensuite, nous observerons son lien avec le monde animal qui le définit en tant qu’être non humain, mi-homme mi-bête, étranger à la société. Comme nous le montrerons, ces deux aspects le prédisposent pour incarner la figure archétypique du coupable dans le cadre du système de personnages de ce roman.

    The aim of this work is to explore the construction of the character of Lawrence Donald Jonhstone in the detective novel L’Homme à l’envers, by French writer Fred Vargas. Firstly, we will analyze how this Canadian man –explicitly described with characteristics opposed to those of other inhabitants of the community taking him in– is presented as a divided self with two different cultural heritages. Secondly, we will observe his connection with the animal world, which defines him as non-human, half man-half beast, and a stranger to society. As we will demonstrate, both these aspects predispose him to occupy the archetypal figure of the guilty in the system of characters featured in this novel.
