The pictorial decoration of the Annunciation Chapel in the Santa Maria degli Angeli Basilica was planned and partially executed by Giovan Battista Lombardelli in 1592. This fact had already been noted by Francesco Federico Mancini in 1983 and today this is confirmed by a document found in the notary section of the state archive in Perugia. Lombardelli, among the most important divulgers of the Barocci's style in Umbria, was called by the commissioner Laura Pontani to complete an ambitious decorative project, that had been initiated earlier in 1591, requesting Barocci to realise the altarpiece depicting the annunciation. This altarpiece was a replica, with some variations, of the painting featuring the identical subject executed by Barocci in 1582-84 for the Francesco Maria II della Rovere chapel in the loreto Basilica.
