Resumen de A Path to Détente?: reflections on the Bernini-Rosa Feud of 1639

Claude D. Dickerson III

  • This essay examines the relationship, both personal and artistic, between Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Salvator Rosa. They are famously linked in a story told by Giovanni Battista Passeri, in which they became embroiled in a public feud over issues of theatrical decorum. A careful review of their careers suggests that their animosity toward one another eventually passed and that they even came to eye one another with a guarded respect. This is shown by their many overlapping colleagues, patrons, and friends and the occasional links between their art.
