In this paper we present the evidence gathered in the excavations carried out at the entrance to the cave of Aitzbitarte III (Renteria, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country) between 1996 and 2002, under the direction of Jesús Altuna. Its stratigraphy has provided several stratigraphic levels (Va, IV and III) with material associated with what has been termed as Gravettian in the Cantabrian region. The main features of the techno-typological analisys and the faunal study are presented, also offering an interpretation about all the different kinds of evidence.
The lithic industry and the faunal assemblage documented show a similar diachronic trend consistent with each other along the sequence. This site provides clues to identify Gravettian evidences and advance in explaining the changes and transformations that led to the Gravettian and ended with it in the Cantabric region, the western Pyrenees and SW France.
