  • Resumen
    • Following the article (published in two parts in earlier numbers of this periodical) devoted to the pulpit and choir enclosure by Maestro Guglielmo in Pisa cathedral (1158-61), the same author analyzes here what remains of the former choir and pulpit of Pistoia cathedral, attributed to the same sculptor and dated to the mid-1160's. The latter pulpit was replaced by the existing one in 1559 by Giorgio Vasari, and the choir screen and crypt demolished when the choir was renovated in 1610 by Jacopo di Gismondino Lafri. Some of the reliefs were discovered upside down in the cathedral floor in 1837, others in 1940, and they are now to be found partly in the lapidarium in the crypt partly inserted in the modern high-altars of the churches of San Francesco and San Giovanni Fuorcivitas. Other reliefs and fragments relating to the pulpit are also preserved in the crypt, and there are further fragments incorporated into the well-head of the Canons' cloister of the cathedral (1562-65). In addition to the remains of the choir and pulpit identified by Alessandra Antonelli (1997) the author identifies other fragments and is able to trace more of the history of the pulpit and choir on the basis of documents published by Alfredo Pacini.
