    Aunque las técnicas digitales hayan hecho habitual la presencia de actores animados junto a otros reales, es posible encontrar numerosos precedentes cinematográficos de la unión entre animación e imagen referencial desde los inicios del cine, lo cual desmiente la idea de que se trata de una característica novedosa de la era digital. Los autores de este artículo consideran que el contacto entre imagen referencial y animación ha orientado la exploración hacia una simulación de las características fotorrealistas de la imagen, lo que hace prioritaria una categorización de la relación entre imagen referencial y animación. El artículo reflexiona además sobre la naturaleza híbrida de diversas técnicas como la rotoscopia o la captura digital de movimiento, unidas por las categorías de lo siniestro y lo subversivo.

    Modern audiences are now more used to seeing animated characters and live humans interacting on the screen thanks to the digital techniques. Despite claims of novelty, mixing animation and live action exists since the birth of cinema. The paper’s authors consider that this hybrid relationship between film and animation has had more aesthetic consequences for the latter, thus leading to the uncanny and subversive elements of the animation and live action relationship. A categorization for researchers interested in the analysis of hybrid animation is consequently proposed. The paper also touches on subjects like the hybrid nature of techniques like rotoscope and performance capture.
