  • The article discusses a proposal put forward by Japan's Liberal Democratic Party to increase the number of immigrants to 10% of the population. An impetus for the plan was a recognition of the need for more workers for Japanese industry and cites concern over decreased Japanese clout as a result of a smaller population. It notes that the Japanese population is declining at a rate that it may require several hundred thousand immigrants a year to maintain its population
