The manifold use of the indicative present in French has aroused our interest and pushed us to explore this matter in other languages, namely Moroccan Arabic and Tamazight Berber. Hence, 'the present' is dealt with from a comparative perspective. Our target is not only to find a basic notion on which the comparison may rely, since the indicative present isn't an interlingual category, but to identify the verbal form that serves to express this notion in the languages under study as well. In order to find a shared basis for comparison avoiding the puzzle of projecting the categories of one language on to another, as well as to face up to the terminological confusions and divergence in the way of conceiving of and dividing tenses in these languages, we have chosen to begin with a notion shared by all these languages 'the current present'. That basic notion serves for a systematic observation and confrontation of the selected languages to be studied. Therefore, we have explored the morphosyntactic means that express this notion; that is, to the identification the verbal form which indicates 'the current present' in Moroccan Arabic, Tamazight Berber and French. Unexpectedly, the identification phase of the verbal form has exposed us to a set of surprises. The f rst one lies in the fact that 'the current present' is not expressed in all these languages by a single verbal form; rather, by many (two in Tamazight Berber and three in Moroccan Arabic). As regards the second one, which is of much significance, it concerns the role that the type of process (Aktionsart) plays to determine the verbal form of 'the current present', particularly in the languages where the latter is expressed by more than one verbal form.
