    This article deals with the use of the French imparfait in the construction [(et) si IMP ?]. First, we thoroughly analyze the semantic contribution of the different elements (the conjunction si, the interrogative mood and the coordinator et) making up the construction [(et) si P ?]. By means of this description, we then try to show that the imparfait gives rise to a dialogic interpretation in this use and that the modal effects observed (notably lesser probability and attenuation) are partly derived from this dialogic interpretation.

    Cet article a pour objet l'emploi de l'imparfait dans le tour [(et) si IMP ?]. Dans un premier temps, nous proposons une analyse détaillée de la contribution sémantique des différents constituants (la conjonction si, la modalité interrogative et le coordonnant et) du tour [(et) si P ?]. À partir de cette description, nous essayons ensuite de montrer que l'imparfait a un fonctionnement dialogique dans cet emploi et que les effets modaux observés (notamment moindre probabilité et atténuation) sont en partie dérivés de ce fonctionnement.
