In this article we present an analysis of the French conditional, the grammatical tense which is used for the expression of "future in the past", as well as the analysis of three verbal forms in German (Indikativ Futur, Konjunktiv I Futur, and the form würde + infinitive), all of which can express the same "future in the past". After a brief overview of the theoretical and formal concepts that are used, we show in our analysis of the two languages the relevance of the notion of "temporal reference framework" for the formalization of the difference between "utterer", "speaker", and the different types of actualizations of a process situated in the Reported Speech Reference Framework towards the Enunciative Reference Framework. These different actualizations are particularly revealed by the temporal reference frameworks for each of the three verbal forms in German. We conclude with a contrastive analysis, also based on the temporal reference frameworks, between the French conditional, which is morphologically constructed from the "future" and the "past", and the form würde + infinitive in German, which comes from the "hypothetical" mood, by showing how these two languages come to be semantically close in the expression of the "future in the past".
