Valeurs spatiales et non spatiales du verbe monter : pour une sémantique constructiviste

    Among the various approaches to polysemy that deal with the analysis of verbs having spatial meanings (like the French verb monter), two dominant tendencies reveal themselves: first, a tendency to privilege certain contextual meanings having to do with the spatial domain; on the other hand, a constructivist tendency that seeks not to privilege particular meanings - spatial or otherwise - in the effort of defining the abstract, stable meaning of a given verb. We will begin with a discussion of the limits of the first tendency. We will then move on to the beginnings of an analysis of the verb monter in order to illustrate the second tendency.

    Parmi les approches dynamiques de la polysémie, abordant l'analyse de verbes ayant des emplois spatiaux, comme monter, deux tendances peuvent être dégagées : une tendance privilégiant certaines significations contextuelles, notamment liées au domaine spatial ; une tendance constructiviste proposant au contraire de ne privilégier aucune valeur particulière, spatiale ou non, pour définir l'identité sémantique invariante du mot. Dans un premier temps, nous soulignerons les limites de la première tendance. Dans un deuxième temps, nous proposerons un début d'analyse du verbe monter illustrant la deuxième tendance.
