La preposizione "avanti" come tecnicismo storico-linguistico

    In studies of the history of language the preposition avanti is often used for dating words, in the nexus «av.[anti] + data» (the date usually refers to the year in which the author who used the word died, if the work where it appears is not datable). It is a technical term, because the word is not used with the traditional meaning of ‘prima di’, but with the new specific one ‘in data non posteriore a’ (semantically close to ante in the nexus terminus ante quem).

    The history of this use (with its first systematic attestations starting from 1979) and its origin, can possibly be traced in a similar use of the Latinism ante (‘not later than’) in the Oxford English Dictionary. In spite of the lack of semantic transparency of the word (detectable in its own misleading meaning of ‘prima di’), the filter introduced by the high register of the word and by its technical nature would seem to justify its use, making normative interventions unnecessary, even if possible.

    Negli studi storico-linguistici la preposizione avanti è spesso utilizzata nelle datazioni dei vocaboli, nel nesso «av.[anti] + data» (l’anno è solitamente quello di morte dell’autore che ha usato il vocabolo, nel caso in cui l’opera in cui esso compare non sia databile). Si tratta di un tecnicismo, in quanto il termine non è adoperato nel tradizionale significato di ‘prima di’, ma con il nuovo specifico valore di ‘in data non posteriore a’ (affine semanticamente a quello di ante nel nesso terminus ante quem). Di tale uso sono studiate la storia (con prime attestazioni sistematiche a partire dal 1979) e l’origine, da rintracciare forse in un analogo uso del latinismo ante (‘not later than’) nell’Oxford English dictionary. Nonostante la non eccessiva trasparenza semantica del termine (avvertibile col valore, proprio ma fuorviante, di ‘prima di’), si ritiene che il filtro operato dal registro alto del termine e dalla sua natura tecnica ne giustifichino l’uso, rivelando non necessari, benché possibili, interventi di tipo normativo
