En sus primeros cuarenta años, las teorías de la integración europea estudiaron el proceso y el resultado de ésta; iban de abajo a arriba. Pero el propio crecimiento provocó en los años 90 del siglo pasado un cambio de dirección de arriba a abajo, desde la integración europea a los Estados miembros y a los entes sub-estatales. El debate sobre la doble dirección ha sido y va a seguir siendo crucial. En el presente artículo se estudian también las variables, mecanismos �con especial referencia a la «bondad del ajuste»�, causalidad y método del trazado del proceso. Con la crisis del último lustro y la subsiguiente supremacía de Alemania son cuestionados tanto la integración europea como el proceso de europeización, que ahora parece de germanización.

In their first forty years, the theories of European integration studied the process and the result from a bottom-up perspective. But in the 90s of last century growth itself caused a change of direction: top-down, from the European integration to the Member States and to the sub-national entities. The debate over the dual direction has been and will continue to be crucial. This paper also examines the variables, mechanisms - with special reference to the "goodness of fit" -, causality and process tracing method. The crisis of the last five years and the subsequent German supremacy are challenging both the European integration and the process of Europeanization, which now looks like Germanization.
