In this first instalment, we reflect on the relevance or otherwise of cinematic canons - collectively arrived at lists of the best, greatest or most significant films deemed essential to the legacy of cinema as an art form. But are canons useful or are they just a doomed enterprise, prone to charges of elitism and reductionism? Here two of our regular contributors argue the toss.
