A Ophiostoma species was found to use Į-pinene as sole source of carbon and energy. According to mass balance calculations almost all of the substrate was converted to carbon dioxide and water. This strain was used individually as biocatalyst in a lava rock packed biofilter fed Į-pinene polluted air for several months. The absence of any contaminant strain was checked by observations under optic and scanning electron microscopes as well as by basic microbiological studies. Į-Pinene and carbon dioxide concentrations were measured both at the inlet and outlet of the biofilters. Elimination capacities of almost 143 g.m-3.h-1 with more than 85% removal efficiencies, were reached with complete mineralization of the pollutant.
