After years of work on efforts to control 2 major tropical diseases, researchers have reported important developments that may lead to a malaria vaccine and a treatment for Ebola virus infection.
One team of researchers demonstrated in a small, preliminary trial that intravenous injections of purified cryopreserved Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites can successfully protect individuals against malaria infection. A second group found in a small study in rhesus macaques that a cocktail of monoclonal antibodies derived from plants may substantially reduce the risk of death from Ebola, even after clinical symptoms appear.
