The historiographical image of J. Bautista Carrafa, the tenant of the Castilian tobacco monopoly between 1663-1671 and al leged pioneer of snuff production in Seville, is inaccurate. After describing the operation of the tobacco business in which he was involved, information relating to Carrafa were reviewed and new archive sources concerning him, exploited. It is concluded that he was promoted into the business by the new christian family of the Márquez Cardoso, who used him as a figurehead -at least in the beginning. The belief in his role as snuff industry founder becomes doubtful in the light of the new data.
