    El presente trabajo propone un enfoque funcional para el análisis del sistema financiero, contrapuesto al tradicional enfoque institucional. El enfoque funcional se ajusta con mayor pertinencia a los procesos evolutivos autónomos del sector financiero, en aquellos contextos donde las interacciones del cambio tecnológico, las desregulaciones y las innovaciones, producen cambios importantes en la estructura y los comportamientos del sistema. Este enfoque mejora de manera relevante la capacidad del monitoreo y regulación de los acontecimientos en el mercado, además de facilitar la comprensión de la transición a nuevas formas de organización del subsistema bancario.

    The present paper proposes a functional viewpoint for the anlysis of the financial system, as opposed to the traditional institutional viewpoint. In a context in which the interaction of technological change together with financial deregulation and innovation have produced radical modifications in the structure and beaviour of the financial system, the functional viewpoint adjusts more easily to the sector's evolutionary process, resulting in significant improvements in terms of the capacity for regulation and monitoring to follow market developments. Another advantage of the functional viewpoint comes from it's capacity to ease the transition towards other forms of organization of the banking subystem.
