There is much that the process of transformation of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Portuguese Court has promoted studies on the interesting history of the city and its wider relationship with the formation of the Brazilian National State. Aiming to contribute to this debate, this paper intents to analyze how the choice for the maintenance of slavery, at a time when the institution was being questioned, was crucial in the formation of the city-Court between the years 1808 and 1815.

Há muito que o processo de transformação da cidade do Rio de Janeiro em Corte lusitana tem promovido estudos interessantes sobre a história da cidade e sua relação mais ampla com a formação do Estado Nacional brasileiro. Com o intuito de contribuir para esse debate, o presente trabalho pretende analisar como a escolha pela manutenção da escravidão, num momento em que a instituição estava sendo questionada, foi fundamental para a formação da cidade-Corte entre os anos de 1808 e 1815.
