    La institución universitaria tiene sus remotos orígenes en el Occidente cristiano. Es el paisaje urbano de las ciudades medievales donde surgen las universidades a modo de corporaciones de aquellos profesionales que tienen como oficio pensar y enseñar, los ontelectuales,un nuevo tipo sociológico. Hacemos hincapié en el hecho fundamental de que la Universidad medieval nace de la entraña misma de la sociedad, es producto no de la soledad de los monasterios sino del bullicio que late en las ciudades de la Edad Media. El surgimiento de las universidades supone un espacio cultural común a toda la cristiandad a partir del cual pudieron aparecer y prosperar: el ámbito urbano, distante de la sociedad monacal y sus aspiraciones. El siglo XIII es su siglo.

    The rise of universities dates back to Western Christianity. It is the urban setting of medieval towns that gave rise to universities as corporations of professionals who devoted themselves to thinking and teaching. These intellectuals were a new sociological type. We lay emphasis on thecritical fact that the medieval university arose from the entrails of society itself. Rather than the solicitude of monasteries, it was the hustle and bustle of cities in the Middle Ages that gave birth to it. The surge of universities implied a shared cultural ground for the Christian world that would serve as springboard for their appearance and growth: the urban environment, detached from the solicitude of monasteries and their aspirations. The 13th Century is their century.
