In Reply We would like to respond to the insightful points made in the letter from Dr Stoecker and colleagues. The intention of our study1 was to evaluate the sensitivity of smartphone apps that claim to identify melanoma and not to evaluate the use of smartphone technology for teledermatology. We did include 1 app that actually sends the images to a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation. While it was not our intention to compare these 2 techniques, we think using both types of apps offers some insight into the level of inaccuracy that a user might expect from an automated app in real-world use.
