This paper deals with the creation, the use and the functions of new words, so called neologisms, in French. Two diverse sources of new words are described in magazines such as À Nous Paris and Les Inrockuptibles, and in colloquial speech, and therefore, two distinct types of neologisms are distinguished, that is neologisms in magazines and neologisms in colloquial speech. Comparing various word-formation processes, a special attention is paid to Anglicism, very frequently used in the analysed magazines. In conclusion, motivation of young French people to create neologisms and that of journalists are compared.
