    • In this article, we argue that the narrative present in the Roman de Renart is used according to some stylistic criterions, in spite of the influence of the verse, which is only one of the reasons why this tense is chosen. We put this deliberate stylistic use in connection with grammatical and stylistic properties of the narrative present tense. To support this thesis, we quote three sorts of arguments:

      1. the typology of the uses of the narrative present shows its preferential occurrence with some types of verbs and in some narrative contexts, so that we can see its choice is often not arbitrary; 2.

the narrative present tense is systematically selected by some types of circumstantial complements, while the verb objects play a great role in the communicative dynamism; 3. its use is quite analogous from one manuscript to another.
