Low adherence to the antiretroviral treatment has repercussions on the appearance of resistance and on the increase of the healthcare expenditure; which leads to an increase in morbility and mortality in the later stage. Objective: To know the degree of adherence of HIV patients in our medium and to relate the treatment's non-compliance to hospital entrance level. Method: Retrospective observational study of patients with antiretroviral treatment in the Medical-Surgical Hospital of Jaén for the period between January and October 2001. The adherence was determined by means of a structured interview and a medication gathering in the Pharmacy Department. Results: A total of 164 patients were analyzed. The adherence by means of an interview was of 57.31% (94 patients), being of 40.87% (67 patients) when determined by medication gathering. 26 of them (15.85%) were entered during the studied period. 80.77% of those entered were non-complying patients (21 of 26) and 19.23% were complying ones (5 of 26).
