    Dos preguntas atraviesan esta investigación: ¿Cuándo y cómo se entrecruzaron la historia entendida como investigación del pasado y el archivo entendido como testigo de los tiempos pasados o recintro privilegiado de la memoria? ¿Cómo nace el interés en la historia y la necesidad del archivo como soporte de la historia anticuaria, y las reflexiones que suscita? Para responderlas se presta especial atención al periodo 1750-1820 y se hace principalmente a través del seguimiento de la evolución del término "archivo" y su relación con la escritura de la historia. Se hace bajo la hipótesis de que los usos del archivo y sus modalidades propias del antiguo régimen se transformaron durante ese lapso y trajeron aparejado el desarrollo de una nueva práctica historiográfica. Porque no es obvo que el archivo se cree y evolucione de cara a los historiadores, sino más bienlo hace frente al orden legal/institucional y gubernamental. El archivo es un instrumento de gobierno. La fusión entre historia y archivo sólo se vislumbra cuando un orden liberal gubernamental convierte en obsoleto al orden legal/institucional anterior, y las leyes pertenecientes al derecho natural comiencen a postularse como eventos históricos.

    Two questions arise from this research: when and howhistory, understood as the investigation of the past, and the archive, understood as a witness of times past or as a privileged site of memory, intertwined themselves? How the interest in history, and the necessity of the archive as a support of atiquarian history is born, and what reflections arise? To answer these questions special attention is placed on the period 1750-1820, particulary by following the evolution of the term "archive" and its relation with the writing of history. This is possible through the hypothesis that the uses of the archive and its own modalities of the ancien régime were transformed during those years, making possible the development or a new historiographical practice. Because it is not obvious that the archive is creates and evolves before the historians, it does it before the legal/institutional and government order. The archive is an instrument of government. The fusion between history and archive can only be glimpsed when a liberal governmental order makes obsolete the previous legal/institutional order, and the law belonging, to the iusnaturalismus start being postulated as historical events.
