  • Resumen
    • Objective: To determine the repercussion of acupuncture utilization in NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) use and in the feeling of pain by patients in a Pain Treatment Unit. Furthermore, we seek to detect the effect of the Unit startup in the use of NSAID in the two Basic Health Zones comprised in it. Material and Method: A follow-up of the patients assisted by the Pain Treatment Unit tookplace during the first semesters of 1998 and 2001. The sources of information used in this study have been personal interviews with the patients and their clinical history. The variables gathered have been: NSAID consumption, pain intensity, pain frequency, incapacity and sleep alteration. The billing of NSAID prescriptions is used to detect the effect of the Unit startup in the use of NSAID by the population comprised in it. Results: The patients assisted by the Unit during the first semesters of 1998 and 2001 have been 666. It was observed a decrease in analgesic drugs and NSAID use by treated patients. The evolution of the remaining variables has also been favorable. It was also detected a reduction in the use of NSAID in the Basic Zones comprised in the Pain Treatment Unit. Conclusions: Acupuncture has been efficient in reducing the use of NSAID and the feeling of pain in patients assisted by the Pain Treatment Unit. It exists a possible relation between the Unit's existence and the reduction in the use of NSAID in the two Basic Health Zones comprised in it
