From the period of the Age of Discovery, we can observe a phenomenon that had as one of its remarkable characteristics, the spread of the cultivation, commercialization and use of a series of plants. Although currently there is a considerable volume of published works on the spices of the East as well as the economic impact of these in the Renaissance, a question remains rarely investigated, we are referring to the spread and use of plants from the New World which in turn also became spices of considerable economic and cultural importance. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze, from the texts of writers, physicians, herbaristas and natural philosophers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, spread, use and cultivation of species of the genus Capsicum, in both the Atlantic and the East Indies, promoted the great sea voyages undertaken by the Portuguese in the fifteenth century.

A partir do período das grandes navegações, podemos observar um fenômeno que teve como uma de suas características marcantes, a disseminação do cultivo, comercialização e uso de uma série de plantas. Apesar de atualmente haver um volume significativo de trabalhos publicados sobre as especiarias do Oriente, bem como o impacto econômico destas no Renascimento, uma questão resta ainda pouco contemplada; referimo-nos à propagação e uso de plantas originárias do Novo Mundo que, por sua vez, também se converteram em especiarias de considerável importância cultural e econômica. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar, a partir dos textos de cronistas, médicos, herbaristas e filósofos naturais dos séculos XVI e XVII, a dispersão, uso e cultivo de espécies do gênero Capsicum, tanto no mundo atlântico quanto nas Índias orientais, promovidos pelas grandes viagens marítimas iniciadas pelos portugueses no século XV.
