A. Hernández Sánchez, Josep Maria Borràs Andrés, Matilde Navarro, M. Martínez, Josep Ramon Germà Lluch

  • Background: To estimate the number of chemotherapy sessions susceptible to be scheduled at the patient's home and, thus, evaluate the impact that it would produce on the assistance activity in an oncologic day hospital (DH). Material and Methods: Calculation of the number of 5-Fluorouracile (5-FU) bolus administrations in monotherapy and of the cures with catheter in a university hospital and in two second-level hospitals between 1998 and 1999 in a DH regime. Evaluation of the percentage of those that could take place at the patient's home. Results: These procedures suppose around 40% of the DH's annual activity. The percentage of sessions that could take place at the patient's home would be of 31-33%. Conclusions: The administration of chemotherapy at home could increase the degree of specialization of a DH. Furthermore, it allows for the integration of therapy in the patient's daily life and in his/her community
