The aim of this article is to offer an initial survey of art collecting by the Este family in the decades following Francesco I d'Este's death in 1658, a subject overlooked until now. The Ducal Palace in Modena, under construction at that time, saw the preparation of highly significant rooms --partly preserved, or which can be reconstructed-- ordered by his successor Alfonso IV, the regent Laura Martinozzi, Alfonso's widow, and Francesco II, their son. It is now possible to document the creation in 1659 of the room destined to display an important cycle of panels by Tintoretto acquired in Venice, and of a "gallaria nuova" furnished with wardrobes, pedestals, and frames (1675). Documents also bring to light a search for paintings by Raphael and Guido Reni to enrich the Ducal picture gallery, extensive genealogical projects that parallel those carried out by the Este of Ferrara in the later sixteenth century, and evidence of a visit to Rome by Francesco II in 1686.
