An interview is presented with kinesiologist Brandon Irwin, focusing on his research on the effect of the coaching behavior of verbal encouragement on athletic performance. He describes his study, which found that a partner quietly setting an example of superior performance was more motivational than actively offering a lot of encouragement as measured by the persistence of the research subjects in physical exercise. Possible applications in a business context are discussed.
