  • Resumen
    • By publishing the Dutch translations of Sebastiano Selio´s Libro I to Libro V, Pieter Coecke provides an entire repertory of classical forms that the maitres d´oeuvre, the sculptors, the stonecutters, and the painters of the ancient Netherlands could use as reference whenever they had to "invent" an architecture, either real or imaginary. Compared with maitres d´ouvre, the painters more easily adopted Serlio´s language to compose the decors in their paintings. However, Pieter Aertsen and his nephew, Joachim Beuckelaer, were alone in perceiving Serlio´s plates as an inexhaustible source of inspiration. It is still difficult to understand the reasons for their fascination with Serlio´s Classicism, since it is very surprising to see the extent to which the nobility of the architectural language contrasts with the rustic character of the merchants and peasants found in their religious as well as profane compositions
