Resumen de Towards a rism series for libretti

Pierluigi Petrobelli

  • Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM) should be augmented by a project that considers addition of "librettos", the printed booklets produced on the occasion of specific musical performances that give the verbal texts of the performance. The eight critical components of the introductory sections of the bookles are analyzed to give an overview of the value of the information contained there. Five major libretto projects from the US, Italy, Germany and other countries are mentioned, but with the note that none of these projects were intended as general and systematic cataloguing of the libretto repertory in its entirety. Not only musicology but also the fields of theatre histoy, economic and social history, dance histoy, and literary history would benefit from the analyzed data from an international project on libretti. The author asks for a commission to consider such a project.
