Resumen de Towards a gender neutral interpretation of professionalism in early childhood education and care (ECEC)

La presencia de los cuidadores y educadores varones en los servicios de educación y atención a la primera infancia es muy escasa prácticamente en todos los países europeos y, a menudo, se encuentra sometida a debate. Tras ofrecer algunos datos al respecto, este artículo describe las recomendaciones y acciones emprendidas desde la Unión Europea para acortar esta brecha entre hombres y mujeres en el trabajo con los niños más pequeños y presenta la actividad llevada a cabo por el Departamento de Estudios sobre Bienestar Social de la Universidad de Gante en la última década. En concreto, el texto profundiza en los motivos que subyacen a esta segregación laboral por género y plantea un nuevo profesionalismo neutral en cuanto a género como vía para superarla. El artículo finaliza con una serie de propuestas y recomendaciones que deberían ser consideradas para lograr una situación más igualitaria entre hombres y mujeres en las profesiones vinculadas al cuidado y la educación infantil.

Male childcare workers are quite scarce in Early Childhood Education and Care services in all the European Countries and often are a controversial subject. After offering some data about this issue, the article describes the recommendations and actions undertaken by European Union to reduce the gap between men and women in their work with the youngest children and shows the research of the Centre for Innovation in the Early Years of the Department of Social Welfare Studies (University of Ghent) during the last decade. Specifically, the text describes the reasons below the fact of this gender inequality and proposes a gender neutral interpretation of professionalism as a way to avoid it. The article ends with proposals and recommendations that should be considered to achieve more equality between men and woman in the professions linked to childhood education and care.
