This paper charts the early development of the New Zealand wine industry. In particular, it focuses on two spheres, the sacred and the secular, and isolates in terms of these the progenitors of the industry. The intention is to show how this ‘prehistory’ was not a co‐ordinated attempt to introduce viticulture but the result of disparate groups and individuals trying to do so for a wide and varying range of reasons.
