The term serendipity is a modern neologism in Spanish that comes from the English language and refers to the way in which a scientific discovery immediately occurs by accident or a strange coincidence. In this revision, we will cite various cases of serendipity and pseudo-serendipity in science and medicine with the purpose of focusing later on serendipity in pharmacology and, above all, on psychopharmacology; emphasizing such process (together with pseudo-serendipity) as apparently one of the most powerful agents for fruitful innovation. Finally, we will conclude with a critical intervention about serendipity and its role in science
