The purpose of this study is to gather information about antibiotic consumption from the perception of those professionals involved in dispensing those drugs. Furthermore, this study aims at providing some data about areas for improvement regarding such consumption. We collected information by means of a questionnaire given to 184 pharmacists throughout the whole country. We conducted a cross-sectional study during the first four months of the year 2010. 88% of the surveyed pharmacists think that betalactams are the most used group. Upper respiratory tract infection is the most common indication (72%) and the main problem related to antibiotic misuse is the creation of resistance (84%). Pharmacists think that increasing the effort in educating the patient, identifying the microorganism responsible for the infection, and monitoring the adherence to treatment are the best possible solutions for improving antibiotic use. Besides, 85.3% of those surveyed think that pharmacists need a specific formation focused on patient's education.
