  • Objective: To have available a formative tool for improving antibiotic use in patients allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics, and evaluate its effectiveness. Method: The formation included: a) a slideshow about beta-lactam antibiotics and general recommendations for preventing risk in patients allergic to such, including information about which antibiotics are safe to administer to those patients; b) a self-evaluation questionnaire regarding the knowledge about 17 antibiotics that was completed before and after the session; and c) an answer sheet including all the answers to the questionnaire given at the end of the session. We analyzed the effectiveness of this formative tool thanks to the self-evaluation of the knowledge about which antibiotics should be classified as safe or not, in patients allergic to beta lactams before and after the formative session. Results: In the pre-session analysis, daptomycin and tigecycline were the most unknown antibiotics by both pharmacists and physicians, while meropenem, piperacillin-tazobactam and ertapenem, were the most unknown for the nursing staff. In the post-session analysis, there remained lower values for clarithromycin, doxycycline, daptomycin and tigecycline. The formative tool's overall effectiveness was of 18%. Recommendations were established for improving antibiotic use in patients with allergy to beta-lactams. Conclusions: The active formation and self-evaluation are becoming an efficient tool for improving antibiotic use in patients allergic to beta lactams, with the purpose of resulting in a quality and safety improvement in the care provided to the hospitalized patient
