Godefroid Kurth et Jean d'Outremeuse : un historien du XXe siècle face à l'invention historique

    Godefroid Kurth, methodological an rigorous historian from the beginning of the twentieth century, and Jean d�Outremeuse, prolix but disorganized chronicler from the fourteenth century, seem to share the same « profession », that of historian. Though, between those two persons stand a gaping abyss of two visions of history totally opposed. For the first one, history is made of positive events, rebuilt by a meticulous study of the sources. For the second one, history is a well of anecdotes useful to interest an audience, it is built with legends, personal inventions whose aim is to create plausibility as well as a true historical narrative. When Godefroid Kurth published in 1910 his critical study on Jean d�Outremeuse, the latter was not anymore able to defend his work. As a consequence, he was slowly forgotten, and his vision of history was exposed to public contempt. What kind of look an actual historian should have on this quarrel? Do the evolution of modern historiography, particularly the linguistic turn, who insisted on narrative aspect of every history, can lead him to rehabilitate the chronicler? Isn�t it more important to understand the approach of the both protagonists, and to see them, in spite of their writer of history status, as subjects, witnesses of their history and their own times ?

    Godefroid Kurth, historien méthodique rigoureux du début du xxe siècle, et Jean d�Outremeuse, chroniqueur prolixe mais brouillon du xive siècle, partagent a priori le même « métier », celui d�historien. Pourtant, entre ces deux personnages se dresse un gouffre abyssal, celui de deux visions de l�histoire entièrement opposées. Pour l�un, l�histoire est constituée d�événements assurés, reconstruits par une minutieuse étude des sources. Pour l�autre, l�histoire est un puits d�anecdotes propres à intéresser un public, elle est construite à coup de légendes, d�inventions personnelles qui visent à la vraisemblance aussi bien qu�à créer un véritable récit historique. Lorsque Godefroid Kurth a publié en 1910 son étude critique sur Jean d�Outremeuse, celui-ci n�était plus à même de se défendre. Il fut en conséquence lentement oublié, et sa vision de l�histoire vouée aux gémonies. Quel regard l�historien actuel doit-il porter à cette querelle ? L�évolution de l�historiographie moderne, en particulier le linguistic turn, qui a insisté sur l�aspect narratif de toute histoire, doit-il le porter à réhabiliter le chroniqueur ? Ne faudrait-il pas tout autant comprendre la démarche de l�un et de l�autre des protagonistes pour les voir tous deux, malgré leur statut d�écrivains de l�histoire, comme des sujets, des témoins de l�histoire et de leur époque ?
