Knowledge and judgement of the criteria of potentially inappropriate prescription

  • Introduction: The Beers and STOPP-START criteria screening tools are applied for the prediction of potentially inappropriate prescription (PIP) in elderly patients. These could be useful as associated alerts to electronic prescription systems. Objective: To analyze the prevalence of PIP in hospitalized elderly, management experience of the tools, physicians knowledge and judgment of the Beers and STOPP criteria in the integration of these as computer alerts in the electronic prescription. Method: Descriptive cross-sectional study of PIP. Subsequent conduction of the survey through the Google doc® application. Results: 191 PIP (6.9%) were encountered. 82.8% of the 35 surveyed physicians was unaware of such criteria. Practically the whole support the use of the PIP prediction tools. Conclusions: Despite the low prevalence of PIP, these criteria are still unknown and considered useful to add them in the alert system associated to electronic prescription
